A LITERACY scheme is encouraging a school’s pupils to read all about it.
For three mornings a week, all Redcar Academy students follow a literacy programme that develops reading and uses newspapers to develop knowledge on local and global issues.Form tutors and support staff deliver the sessions, with students enjoying the chance to develop their reading skills.
It builds their vocabulary and spelling skills, which are transferable to all subjects, and helps develop sound social and emotional skills.
And advanced skills teacher in English, Emma Beaumont said: “Students are gaining confidence, talking about their enjoyment of reading and sharing their learning with staff and their peers.
“So many students are more proactive in engaging with their reading and getting back to reading for pleasure. It is great to see students getting their head into a book!”
Students visited a book gala at Eaglescliffe’s Preston Park Museum where they met children’s authors Philip Ardagh, Steve Cole, Steve Skidmore and Steve Barlow.
The students also participated in a school assembly, The Power of Words. Assistant headteacher Pauline Douglas said: “Our love of reading is having an impact on students and staff at so many levels.”
