As usual International Dance Day started off with a bang at Redcar Academy. Over 60 students and staff participated in a Flashmob which took place in the school Yard. With songs like ‘Oops I did it again’ by Britney Spears and Gangnam style by PSY the whole school enjoyed the performance.
International Dance Day has been an important event at Redcar Academy since 2007. Throughout the week the students perform 6 times to the local primary schools, the students in the school and members of the public.
Each year a well known choreographer writes a message for International Dance Day, this year it was the Taiwanese Choreographer, Lin Hwai-Min who created the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in 1973.
His message is:
“Come, turn off your television, switch off your computer, and come to dance.
Express yourself through that divine and dignified instrument, which is our body.
Come to dance and join people in the waves of pulses.
Seize that precious and fleeting moment.
Come to celebrate life with dance.”
The styles of dance range from ballet, to contemporary to Fosse. The students work exceptionally hard and have been working on the dances since the beginning of the year. Many students wish to do solos and duets which they have choreographed themselves which is a great achievement.
This year Redcar Academy raised over £100 for Dance Aid which is a new and exciting charity that harnesses the energy of dance to transform the lives of vulnerable children
