On the 24th June Redcar Academy took a step into the unknown as the whole school went off site to take part in the first school sports day to be held at an athletics stadium (Clairville Stadium – Middlesbrough). Apart from the mammoth logistical task of transporting 550 staff and students half way across the county; the PE staff were keen on producing a safe, enjoyable and effective event.
The day kicked off with some fantastic hurdles races where there was drama and controversy as students battled to take an early points lead for their house. The morning session saw the girls’ take to the track and the boys’ to the field as the sun attempted to shine. Our short lunch break was timed to perfection as the heaviest rain shower of the day took centre stage as staff and students took shelter in the stands.
The afternoon session started with a bang as Akif Hassan (year 10) lit up the stadium with a glittering performance in the 800m making the event look easy. Mr Skidmore kept the crowd entertained with Mexican waves and his eclectic taste in music. Students enjoyed a free drink and ice cream courtesy of Mrs Parker and the day finished in a fitting way with some fantastic relay races.
A huge thank you to staff and students for their participation in the day. A special thank you to the PE staff and all of our helpers on the day, a successful day that we hope to repeat next year.
