For my first blog of this academic year I want to focus on the students of Redcar Academy. The student body has been transformed with the change in their uniform and Thursday 5th September was a very proud day for me, as our students made their way into the building in their new uniform. They looked fabulous and they were so pleased with themselves as they walked in to school. Our parents have sacrificed a lot to make sure their children have the correct uniform and met the expectations of the academy.
Very few of the students did not conform and over the last week this has now dwindled to a handful. I have spoken to each house this week, in their assembly, and told all the students how proud I am of them and the change they have made.
In addition to the uniform the vast majority of them have suitable bags for school. Organisation is key to being successful so we have provided a planner for recording homework and events and encouraged all students to have a bag big enough to carry their equipment and books to and from school. The staff are having a big push on homework this year and we’ve taken out a subscription to ‘I am learning’ so our students can do homework online as well as on paper.
The Farwath Trust, who have been linked with the school for many years, have donated funds so we can create and equip a new library and learning resource centre. Over the summer an area was transformed into our new LRC. In addition the academy has been successful in obtaining a grant to buy new books. Developing independent learners is a focus for the academy and the resource base will help. The official opening will be in October.
It’s great to be back! The staff and students here at Redcar Academy are fantastic, hardworking and caring people. The first two weeks have flown by.
