Over half term members of the boys and girls year 10 rugby teams truly had the chance of a lifetime as we had a behind the scenes tour of Twickenham Stadium, London and also the chance to be trained by 3 of England’s rugby players. The day was a reward for winning the Natwest Future Stars competition based around the Under 15 national cup.
The day started early with a 6am meet up time at the school. However, Mr Williams provided a sports movie marathon down to Twickenham which kept everyone happy.
Once we arrived at Twickenham we had the opportunity to go into the home changing rooms and sit and look around where the England team are before and after their games. Our tour guide shared the history of the changing rooms and some of the unique sports science equipment and technology used to enhance performance. We then went into one of the executive suite boxes and had a wonderful view of the pitch and the full stadium which seats 84,000 at capacity.
We then hopped back on the bus for a short journey to the Lensbury hotel and training ground. The facilities are where the New Zealand All Blacks are going to be based for the rugby world cup in 2015 and we could see why! Once we arrived at Lensbury our 22 students on the trip had a training session with Dave Wilson (Bath Rugby), Matt Mullen (Wasps), and Jonny May (Gloucester Rugby). All 3 players are currently part of the England Squad preparing for the autumn internationals which run throughout November.
The session was hard work with a lot of the drills the students were undertaking were the same as current England players! However, the two hour session was a lot of fun and students had an outstanding experience of using professional training facilities and input from the England players.
Jack Sullivan, Courtney Prest, and Bryony Morris along with Mr Williams faced the media to talk about our experiences of the day. Highlights definitely included our Redcar “Selfie” with the England players!
The students who attended the trip despite the long day on the bus were absolutely outstanding and a real credit to the academy. It certainly was a day none of us will ever forget.
