In February, students at Redcar Academy received a visit from coach and former boxer Amanda Coulson, as part of the Sky Sports Living For Sport initiative. As a figure who has won major honours on the international stage for Great Britain, the visit gave the students an opportunity to learn more about the hard work and discipline required to succeed in a career in sport.
Amanda’s visit came as part of a wider project that student sport leaders in Years 9 and 10 have been working on in recent months, which aims to increase physical activity among their peers through dodgeball competitions for Year 7 and 8 students. Amanda worked closely with the sport leaders on her visit, sharing useful tips and best practice to help the students get the very most from the project. At the same time, she held boxing coaching classes to other students, introducing many to the challenges, rigours and rewards of a brand new sport.
The day proved to be a hugely successful one, representing a shining example of the benefits that the Living For Sport initiative brings.
Lesley Shepherd, School Sports Coordinator at Redcar Academy, commented: “Amanda Coulson’s visit was a brilliant experience for the students. She has done a huge amount to develop women’s boxing in this country despite a great deal of adversity, so she is a fantastic role model for both the girls and boys to look up to. The student leaders’ response to her guidance was excellent, with the dodgeball project a great success so far. We are looking forward to our continued involvement in such inspirational sporting schemes.”
